Why I Use CFexpress™ Type A Cards (By Mike Carroll)

With today’s advancements in technology, the mirrorless world has evolved to offer camera bodies capable of capturing an impressive number of frames per second. Professional models like the Sony Alpha 1 and A7R V are prime examples—both featuring high-resolution sensors and a wide range of advanced features. These systems deliver the performance needed to create top-tier content.

Wildlife Photography:

For wildlife photography, I had the opportunity to truly put these cards to the test during extended shooting sessions in demanding conditions. Photographing the peregrine falcon—the fastest bird in the world—was especially challenging, as tracking their sudden, rapid movements required both speed and precision.

Speed:

It’s osprey season, and I was able to capture some great shots in beautiful light down at the Jersey Shore. The Delkin BLACK CFexpress Type A VPG200 Memory Cards performed flawlessly, with maximum write speeds of 1740MB/s for the 960GB and 1710MB/s for the 480GB version. I shot in compressed RAW at the highest frame rate without any interruptions—an impressive performance from these cards!

I’ve used UHS-II SD cards with a maximum write speed of 300MB/s in both the A1 and A7R V, but they filled the buffer very quickly.

Continuous Shooting:

When shooting time-lapses with large files—such as 60MP images—I always rely on my BLACK CFexpress Type A cards. For specific types of photography, like capturing the Milky Way or other night scenes, I switch to uncompressed RAW to retain as much image data as possible. Shooting in uncompressed RAW gives me greater control over the file, especially when working at high ISOs.

Bottom Line:

The BLACK Series CFexpress Type A cards are an essential part of my daily workflow. Their performance allows me to shoot longer in demanding situations where it matters most. With exceptional speed, rock-solid reliability, and the industry’s best warranty, they’re a win-win all around.
